      Mauritania Visa Policy

Mauritania's visa policy states that all visitors must obtain a visa unless they are from visa-exempt countries. The visa policy represents a set of rules and regulations determining the types of visas one must obtain and who requires a visa or not to visit the country. Mauritania is self-styled as the Islamic Republic, and visitors are required to respect its culture and traditions when in the country.

Visas as obtained from foreign missions abroad, immigration offices at home, and through online portals.

Furthermore, these visas are issued for specific purposes and come with varying validities.

You should also know that the visa policy affects international visitors differently because of their nationality, the purpose of their visit, and the type of visa they apply for. The government also institutes this visa to protect locals and foreigners and preserve the culture and integrity of the people.

      Visa Exemption

Under the current visa policy, only citizens from a few countries may visit Mauritania without visas. These countries are largely fellow West African countries, including Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria, while nationals from other countries must apply for visas before visiting for whatever reasons. The visa exemption list is always changing in light of emerging diplomatic realities, so you should check the list if you wish to visit to know whether you qualify for visa-free entry.

      Non-Visa Exempt Visitors

Non-Visa-exempt visitors can visit Mauritania only after applying for and getting a valid visa.

You can obtain more than a few visa options according to the purpose of your trip. Visitors can also get single and multiple entry visas; short-term visas are issued for tourism and other leisure purposes, while long-term visas are issued for persons who may wish to stay in the country for an extended period.

Visitors may also apply for visas on arrival at any of the entry points or an e-visa online. Both options are meant for short family visits, tourism, business, or transit visits. So deciding which option to go for is exclusively the applicant's choice as long as they meet all the requirements.

      Mauritania Visa On Arrival

The visa on arrival is issued to visitors at Nouakchott – Oumtounsy international airport only, so anyone who wishes to enter the country without initially holding a visa must do so through this airport. It is issued as a single-entry document and allows the holder to stay up to 30 days. While most foreigners qualify for a visa on arrival, Syrian nationals are required to apply for pre-approval from the Director General of Mauritania's National Security.

      Electronic Visa

The electronic visa has the same feature as the visa on arrival but is suited for visitors who don't wish to waste time at the arrival section for a visa on arrival. Applicants must fill out an online application form, attach a valid passport with at least six months validity and a blank page, and a recent digital passport photograph. The applicant must also show that they have sufficient funds for their expenses and a yellow fever vaccination certificate. An email will also be required to receive the electronic visa once the Mauritanian authorities approve it.

Key Information About Mauritania e Visa and Travel Tips

Use the same passport: Travel with the passport you applied for the e-visa with, not a different one. Visas are linked to only one passport, so you will not be allowed into the country even if you use a different one bearing your details.

Time for your application: Visa applications take only a few days to approve, so bear this in mind when applying for online visas. You should apply for it not more than a week before the day you plan to make the trip.

Use Valid Information/Documents: The documents and information you use for your application should be valid; otherwise, your application will be rejected. Ensure that the information you provide is the same as on your documents.

Lastly, use only a document that is yours. Even if you are lucky to get the visa, you will be deported immediately if you are caught.

Application Fee: The application fee must be paid before submitting the form. Note that this fee is not refundable and doesn't mean the visa will be issued to you if you don't qualify.

Respect The Custom: Mauritania is a profoundly conservative society rooted in strong Sunni Muslim principles. If you want to visit this country, be prepared for a culture shock and do well to respect the local laws and customs. Avoid doing anything that will offend the senses of the locals. If you are not fluent in Arabic or French, it pays to move around with a guide who understands the culture and will help you navigate your way around.
